Negotiating with credit card companies is not as hard as it sounds. Individuals with credit problems should approach their credit card companies for help. Consumers should not hesitate to ask for better interest rates because they will be surprised at how willing credit card companies are to accommodate their needs. After all, lesser interest payments are better than defaults.
Consumers should not approach the negotiation in a haphazard manner or the creditor will not take the request seriously. Below are some tips to keep in mind when bargaining with a credit card company:
Gather various credit card offers
Most people receive 0% offers in their mailbox. If you receive such offers, don’t immediately put it in the trashcan. Instead, gather up these offers whether you’re interested in them or not and look into the offer, the rates, and the perks being offered. It will give a baseline to negotiate from.
Showing these offers to the credit card company will basically prove that you don’t need their services since there are many other offers. Any consumer can reason out that they should be charged less since they can get better rates from other companies.
Organize credit card information
For consumers with more than one credit card, it is important to make a list of everything. List the balances of each, the interest rates being charged, the APRs, and whether the current rates are the promotional rates. From here, choose the cards that offer the best rates. A consumer should try to determine if transferring their balance to this card is free, or if the transfer charges are feasible.
Try to contact a company supervisor
Transferring debts from one card to another does not solve the problem entirely. It is possible to lower the rate even further. Pick up the phone and call the credit card company.
Take note that calls will automatically be directed to customer service representatives who are in no position to give clients a better deal. Ask for their supervisors. A consumer needs to talk to someone who has the authority to waive their annual fees and lower their interest rate.
Plead your case
Once the authorized person is on the line, plead your case. Tell them that there have been two or three 0% offers from rival firms. Be polite during the negotiation process because this is a good strategy to get the best deal possible. Inform them that while doing business with them has been great so far, you will be forced to close the account because of the unreasonably high fees.
As expected, most if not all credit card companies will offer you something. Success will be achieved at varying degrees. Some will offer 0% interest at a fixed timeframe while others might offer a 1% interest rate reduction. It is important to decide whether the offer is acceptable or not. Always remember that the ultimate goal is to reduce the credit card debt to the lowest possible level. |
