How Does Your Credit Score Affect Whether You Get a Job?

A credit score says a lot about you and how you manage your money.  It not only shows your current debt, but it also shows how responsible you are by tracking how much you pay on each open account each month, and if you pay them on time.  These credit scores and reports are essential when you’re looking to purchase large items such as a home, boat or car, and they also assist people in obtaining consumer related items like credit cards.  But what many people might not realize is that more and more employers are relying on credit reports as a means of determining who they hire.

Banks and other financial related institutions and companies have asked potential employees for a copy of their credit score for many years.  In essence, this is because the banks want to be certain that their employees are able to manage their own credit responsibly.  The main way of thinking is that if an employee is good with his or her own personal credit, they will be good with their customer’s credit and make good decisions on their behalf.  It also shows that they do not have any late payments and are not in default, and namely that the potential employee does not owe them any late payments.

Today, more corporations are using a credit report or credit score as a way to perform a type of credit background check on potential employees. This score gives them insight into the person’s life and how well they are able to handle responsibility.  If you apply for a job that requires a credit check, you must be notified in advance, and sign something giving them your permission.  This is the law, so make sure you’re aware of what the employer is looking at.  Additionally, you can ask for a copy of the report once they give you an answer on whether you’re hired or not.

While your credit score is not a total reflection of who you are, it is a very important insight into your life that gives employers a better chance to get to know you.  Checking credit reports as a condition of employment has become more common than ever before, so it’s essential that you know what yours looks like.  If you’re looking for a new job, it’s a good idea to get a copy of your credit score ahead of time so you can check it for errors and make any corrections ahead of time.  This way, you can prevent any problems from occurring when they take a look at the report.
