Where Can I Get My Credit Report?

Your credit report can be the key to getting the things you want and need in life.  Whether it’s a new home, new car, or other large item, the information on your credit report determines how much credit you will be granted in order to make these purchases.  Sometimes people apply for credit and get turned down simply because they are not aware of what is showing up on their credit report.  Fortunately, there are ways to get a copy of your report so you can take a look at where you stand before you make big financial decisions.

Your credit score and the information collected on your report is essential to determining how much credit you can get from banks and other lending institutions. This information is stored and updated by three main companies: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax.  Each of these companies keep track of your outstanding credit balances, how much money is available on each account, how much you owe on each, and what your monthly payments are.  The report also looks at any outstanding collections, late payments, or other dings that can bring your credit score down.

It’s important to get a copy of your credit report on a fairly regular basis so you can get an idea of where you stand.  In addition, you need to be able to see if there are any errors or if anything needs correction.  You can obtain a free copy of your report once per year from the US government.  You can find this information online and request a copy, free of charge.

Another way to get your report is to go directly to one of the three major credit-reporting agencies and request it.  This is available for a fee, which differs between the different agencies, but the reports are full of information you can use to arm yourself when it comes to applying for credit.  Aside from the major agencies, there are several websites that allow you to get a copy of the report, and then check up on it as often as you wish.  In cases such as this, you would most likely be required to pay an ongoing monthly fee, but you’d be able to take a look at your report and any updates whenever you need to.

If you decide to go ahead and apply for a mortgage, auto loan, or other form of credit, you can ask the bank you’re applying with to give you a copy of your credit report.  When you apply for a mortgage, you are entitled to your report free of charge from the lender you’ve applied with.  If there are any discrepancies, it’s important that you let your lender or mortgage broker know right away so you can prevent any problems from happening.  There are several different ways to get your credit report, so take advantage of them in order to keep track of your credit.
